Introduction.

Castles Education LLP is a fast-growing group of Independent Schools providing specialist educational services for 11 – 16-year-old students with social emotional and mental health issues. We are seeking applications from suitably experienced candidates to help us build upon the Castles vision and to support our rapid growth. Our ‘Futures’ educational programme aims to build self-belief, create social and personal opportunity, raise standards, develop ambitious personal aspirations and to create safe trusting environments for everyone in our care regardless of their social, emotional, personal or geographical background.

The purpose of this role:

An army marches on its stomach and our pupils and staff are no different. We are looking for an experienced cook to help continue and expand our 5 star (hygiene) rated kitchen service at our Scunthorpe school.

The role will of course include healthy eating / menu specification, purchasing, budgets and the preparation and service of school meals and beverages as well as maintaining a professional and safe facility. We will expect the successful candidate to take control of the kitchen, maintain hygiene standards and be able to demonstrate our high quality offer to visitors, parents, pupils and other stakeholders when required. We have high expectations for the safe operation and cleanliness of our kitchens and will expect you to run a tight ship.

In schools such as ours, the kitchen and refectory are more than just lunches. They’re frequently use to offer additional safe spaces, time out and counselling in a less formal setting and your understanding of this additional need (and the reason why it is so beneficial to our pupils) will be expected.

Castles Schools are modern, vibrant facilities with excellent equipment hosting up to 60 students per School at one time. Class sizes are small which promotes our desire for high-quality teaching and learning. Our learners are supported with external vocational experience providing the holistic learning environment required for a rounded education.

Health & Safety:

The school has a comprehensive policy statement on Health & Safety. You will be expected to take all reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself, your colleagues and all other people who could be affected by your actions at work. You will be expected to co-operate with the school’s health & safety officer to enable them to fulfil all legal obligations.

Job Specifics:

Your duties will include (but may not be limited to):

  • Developing systems of operation that make the most efficient use of human and material resources.

  • Assessment and select the most appropriate menus providing tasty and nutritious meals within nutritional and dietary guidelines.

  • To ensure children with special diets, food intolerances and allergies are identified

  • Ensure, by talking to them and helping them, that pupils make informed choices.

  • Take a highly visible role in the preparation, cooking and serving of the meals.

  • Ensure expenditure is kept within authorised budget limits by completing weekly financial returns, stock sheets, periodic stock taking.

  • Ensure Health and Safety and food hygiene procedures are adhered to at all times and that defects to equipment and premises are reported appropriately to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Carry out regular checks of kitchen equipment in accordance with specified procedures to ensure all equipment is hygienic and safe working order and complies with relevant regulations.

  • Organise and undertake on the job training for all kitchen staff to ensure high standards of food hygiene and quality of supplies are maintained.

  • Liaise with outside agencies i.e., Environmental Health Officers and suppliers to ensure high standards of food hygiene and quality of supplies are maintained.

  • Ensure the security of the kitchen and storerooms is maintained at all times to provide a safe working environment.

  • Comply with Health and Safety, Fire Regulations and all other organisational policies maintaining our 5 star hygiene rating.

  • Emptying waste bins or similar receptacles, transporting waste material to designated collection points

  • Establish effective working relationships and set a good example through presentation and personal and professional conduct

About You:

To succeed in this role we are looking for an individual who can demonstrate and fulfil the following key criteria:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of food hygiene, handling and storage procedures/requirements in a 5 star rated kitchen facility.

  • Knowledge and experience of building menus around healthy eating.

  • experience of small budget management preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.

  • High standards of personal and professional hygiene

  • Organised and methodical approach

  • Reliability

  • Team player

  • A commitment to the responsibility of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people

  • Willingness to undertake any further training including first aid as required by the post

  • Communicate effectively with both staff and students

  • Work flexibly and share in workloads, particularly during periods of pressure

  • Be able to carry out all duties to a very high standard, matching the ambitions of our school to excel in all service areas.
